65 years ago today.

We discovered a bit of history approximately 500 meters from our house.

We are renting our house from an elderly gentleman who has lived in Jurbise, Belgium for his entire life.  Born in 1930, he was fourteen years old on this day.  If asked about 1944, Mr. Munier gets a little misty, smiles and just says, “Merci.”

Tribute to the Americans for our liberation on 3 September 1944 here Major General M. Rose captured 268 German soldiers. ~The Resistance

Just a few months later, General Rose joined his comrades in Fiddler’s Green.

On March 30, 1945 a few miles south of the city of Paderborn in a rural forest area, General Rose rounded a corner in his jeep and found himself surrounded by several German tanks. As he withdrew his pistol, a young German tank commander shot the General.
