The Scouts participated in this year’s Bastogne Walk, commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
Zach’s Scout Troop did a 10-miler. Sam and Nate did a 5-miler. They awoke Saturday morning to about an inch of snow. That rapidly melted and created realistic conditions…they hiked about 1/3 of the way through calf-deep Belgian mud.
Lots of reenactment encampments along the routes.
The History Channel’s Battlefield Detectives series has a good overview of the battle.
The Ardennes battle drives home the lesson that a large-scale offensive by massed armour has no hope of success against an enemy who enjoys supreme command of the air. Our precious reserves had been expended, and nothing was available to ward off the impending catastrophe in the east. ~General von Mellenthin
